Juneau is a maritime community.
The U.S. Coast Guard, civilian and active duty, is the largest federal employer in Juneau, with NOAA the second largest.
The University of Alaska Southeast has a College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (Scholarship program). CSPI is a program designed for motivated individuals who demonstrate a high caliber of academic and leadership excellence and who desire to serve their country in the United States Coast Guard. Students who are accepted into the program will be enlisted into the United States Coast Guard, complete basic training during the summer, and receive full funding for up to two years of college.
As of 2017, there are 320 commercial fishing vessels in Juneau, with 412 permit holders and 15.6 million pounds landed for earnings of almost $20 million.
The Juneau Maritime Festival is the first weekend in May after the annual Blessing of the Fleet.
