Juneau enjoys a splendid setting between the alpine peaks of the Tongass National Forest and the Pacific waters of the Inside Passage. It is the largest American city, and the nation’s only state capital, that is not on the continental road system. Uniquely, the city is accessible only by air and water.
The city has year-around daily jet service to Seattle and Anchorage, and regionally to Yakutat, Cordova, Ketchikan, Sitka, Wrangell and Petersburg. Commuter airlines provide daily service between Juneau and other surrounding communities. The city is served by the Alaska Marine Highway System, with service from Bellingham, WA, and throughout the region. Capital Transit offers daily bus service in the city and its suburbs. Freight and bulk goods are delivered twice weekly by barge.
